A Purpose Served

When I came up with the idea of 3by9 (yes for once I can honestly say that it was just me that came up with the idea…I know it’s a complicated idea that only brilliant minds like myself could think up) I knew that it wouldn’t have an extended period on the web. I was with two geniuses of the web and figured we all had something important to share with people. However, doing it over at the 9rules blog didn’t seem appropriate so I figured we could start another blog to share these ideas.

Since then over 200 entries have been published during the past 18 months and each of them showing how different our personalities are, but how similar our views of the world around us are. When I brought up the idea of 3by9 to Mike and Tyme I informed that every 3 months we would revisit the site to see if it was time to put it away. Well we did that the first 3 months and haven’t looked back since. However, we all agree that now is the time because we are moving in our own directions.

We are still very much a team when it comes to 9rules, but have started to diverge into our own projects and this has taken time away from the site. So instead of keeping a site dragging along it is time to put it to rest. It served its purpose and it was a relief knowing that we didn’t intend on making the world’s greatest blog, just a blog that was great to us.

If you are interested in what we are doing I suggest you subscribe to Flyosity and Tyme Said. Be sure to also follow us on Twitter: @scrivs, @tyme and @mike9r.

With all of that said thanks to everyone that reads the site and who has commented. It was a joy writing for a site with no restrictions, no concerns of traffic or worries about money. It was a blog that started the way blogging itself started, to share ideas and have our voices heard.

3by9 Podcast #17

Outside of the Apple SDK bug fix, today’s podcast is about online social applications. We didn’t plan it that way, as per usual, it just happened.

  • Mike talked about the Apple SDK.
  • Scrivs brought up FriendFeed. We talked about how it works, and our thoughts on the application. There are some things we don’t like.
  • Can’t talk about FriendFeed without talking about Twitter.
  • Which of course led to a discussion on information overload.
  • We talked about Sk*rt. At first we were confused then Scrivs figured it out. Let’s just say they take a different approach to things.

3by9 Podcast #16

The main discussion involves the Dream Team proposition by Arrington. In a nutshell we don’t think it would work the way he describes it and we continously ask why he would even suggest it. Not much longer after we finished the show he responds with Our Master Plan hinting that he is throwing the competition a curve ball. Either way it will be interesting what happens in the future considering our own conglomerate will be making a revival shortly.

If you want a summary of the entry then I suggest you have a read at Kara Swisher’s translation. What it comes down to us is you have to find the right sites with the right goal. If the goal is to make money then you might encounter more issues than say having a goal of just showing quality content from around the web.

After that we talk about design and a couple of other topics. Yeah I can’t remember. I suck.

3by9 Podcast #15

We took a little bit of time off but came back as strong as ever. Some topics we hit:

  • Talking about this 3by9 entry that got on Daring Fireball, MacRumors, and Arstechnica, but failed to get any Digg or Reddit votes.
  • Editors are necessary whether you think they are or not. Don’t agree? Hit us up in the comments.
  • Who’s responsible for carrying on a conversation on IM?
  • The appropriate age for you to enjoy having your parents as Facebook or MySpace friends. Is there one?
  • Bebo got bought…. yawn. What is Bebo again?
  • Tyme’s a baller and has experience with large amounts of cash. Paul spends all money he currently has in his possession, immediately, on candy. Mike laughs.

It was a lot of fun getting back together, back into the swing of things. The podcast flowed pretty smoothly, I suggest you download it: 3by9 Podcast #15

3by9 Podcast #13

Mike steers the ship on this one and asks which company would we work for if offered jobs by Google and Facebook? I say that Tyme steers us off topic, but she says it was Mike’s fault. In the end it doesn’t matter because you get the juicyness that is the 3by9 podcast. Also listen so you don’t miss who we have endorsed for President and Super Bowl picks.

3by9 Podcast #12

We explore the concept of the Power of One a bit more and find out what a business needs to do to stay on top of the game without going away from their core competencies. After that we ride on Digg a little bit and admit they should’ve sold a long time ago.

That’s basically it, we stayed on topic pretty well this time. The apocalypse is near I guess.

3by9 Podcast #11

I picked a topic and psychic Scrivs started talking about it before I could talk about it…so we really talk about it: do preconceived notions get in the way of making informed decisions? Then we moved on to the topic of having your own business and the responsibilities that go along with it. Then a deep question: are you able to face the fact that the “thing” you want isn’t meant to be yours?

And don’t ask how we got on this topic (Scrivs did it), if a group of Caucasians and people of color were placed in a field, what would they do?

3by9 Podcast #10

The team goes back to audio-only after having a audio-video extravaganza over at 9rules a few days before. It’s a little weird to only hear the person and not see their face again but we make due, with hilarious and unexpected results. The two services we’re talking about in the first part are Mogulus and Ustream.tv. Topics for Part 1:

  • Video vs. audio. Which is more interesting? Which is easier to start with?
  • Discovering new things on the web really does make lives more interesting.
  • Should you think about scale off the bat? The “What If” scenarios sneak up on ya if you don’t…
  • Plan for now vs. plan for the future. You gotta do both if you want to win.

Cop Part 1 of Podcast #10. Streaming kills puppies.

Now Part 2 it really gets interesting:

  • Mike blurts out random things at random times, Paul and Tyme rightfully laugh at him.
  • Personalities coming through on video vs. audio. Why is Vinvin from Seesmic funny?
  • Is Oprah a sellout? Does she get revenues from the books she picks?
  • Mike busts Tyme’s chops about word pronunciation. Paul and Tyme bust Mike’s chops for being anal. Gross.
  • Grammar-checking software for new English speakers. Should you use it?

Cop Part 2 of Podcast #10.

3by9 Podcast #9

I know I usually clown the crew for how often we jump from topic to topic and the extended period of time we talk compared to other shows, but hot damn. We seriously talk about a lot of subjects this show for a very, very long time. I’ll try in list form off the top of my head what we seem to cover and see if you can follow the stream of how we got to each point.

  • How’s the weather? Sure is cold.
  • Pakistani gloves.
  • Eyes vs. The View
  • People change
  • Phone in toilet
  • eBay scams
  • Variable interest mortgage rates
  • Scoble banned from Facebook
  • Sharing data from Facebook
  • Monetizing Twitter

Um, yeah.

3by9 Podcast #8

It’s the last one of the year and can you tell we’re getting excited? If you don’t want to spend money on a logo then find yourself a nice dingbat character. How many designers does it take to make stuff pixel precise? Sharing doesn’t mean caring if you’re Google Reader. Reddit comments make Mike feel stupid inside. Domain and MySpace posers. 2007 in tech turned out to be a yawner. Get yourselves to Duels.com and see if you’ve got what it takes.

It’s Friday so stay sexy.
