Describing Design

Let’s talk about how one describes a visual design. One- or two-word phrases that are abstract enough so that they embody just the right attributes of the site they’re describing. Sleek, modern, organic, mechanical, shiny, homey, rusted, etc. Not too abstract like professional, smart, corporate, friendly, etc. For non-designers, I feel that describing a design is very difficult. When a client is trying to describe what they are looking for to a designer, it’s important to communicate properly. Here are some website examples and the words I would use to describe them:

  • Coudal - Organic, minimalist, print-like, warm, unobtrusive.
  • Agenzia - Post-modern, minimalist, industrial, cold.
  • New York Magazine - Trendy, flashy, bright.
  • Beseku - Stark, modern, living, tight.

Got any sites you’d like to describe?
